Молодая и энергичная журналистка, донимая шефа про однотипные статьи и интервью, просит дать ей что-нибудь интересное. Он рассказывает ей историю об одном изобретателе, который выдвинул идею о том, что все машины являются «живыми». Он передает журналистке изобретение ученого, и дает ей задание, взять у этого изобретателя интервью. Девушка отправляется в родной город этого изобретателя-отшельника. Ведь судя по слухам, он живет в этом городе совсем одни. Когда-то давно в этом городе кипела жизнь. Но со временем заводы и промышленность закрывались. Людям стало негде работать, и они потихоньку начали уезжать из маленького городка. Только этот доктор остался жить там…
